Permaculture Design 101 Workshop

This 6 hour introductory workshop consists of 3 primary sections. We have designed a flexible schedule with time for lots of Q&A and student participation.

1.  What is Permaculture?

We will explore the genesis and history of permaculture, examine the guiding ethics and principles behind the design methodology, and break out in small groups to delve into each concept.

2. Where is Permaculture?

This section showcases permaculture design and techniques being applied at the Bullocks Homestead on Orcas Island.  This well known and beautifully developed permaculture site has been in operation for nearly 30 years and offers educational programs, landscape installations, and is home to an extensive permaculture plant nursery.  Their company Exos Design offers permaculture consulting around the globe.

3. How do I Permaculture?

This fun and insightful hands-on activity looks at urban, suburban and rural scenarios to develop designs you can create in your own homes and neighborhoods based on ease, effectiveness, and cost.

Food - Annual and perennial vegetables, small garden beds, herbs and medicinals, fruit tree guilds, food hedges, gleaning and community supported agriculture

Water - Irrigation systems, gray water installation, rainwater catchment, water conservation

Energy - Insulation and conservation, solar hot water, photo voltaics

Infrastructure - Cloche, greenhouse, plant nurseries, retrofitting, salvage
